Going Up Up Up
Congratulations to Alastair and his weekend team who have won the Peterborough Weekend League Second Division. Needing six points to guarantee them top spot, they scored an emphatic 10 – 0 win at Deeping BA. This means that Whittlesey Manor, who have games in hand, cannot catch them. The team have done extremely well this season only losing one game and that was by one shot!
The Club hosted the Newton Cup County match between Northants and Huntingdonshire on Saturday 26th June. This is a big honour for the Club and is all down to Nick, Malcolm and Mick’s hard work in preparing a green that is the best in the area.
I am pleased to report that the condition of our green received accolades from both teams. We were also praised for our excellent hospitality. Thanks to all members who contributed to making it such a successful day.
Following on from us successfully staging the County match, we were also asked to host the Final of the County Club Championship (The Dan Duffy Trophy). This was held on Thursday 22nd July, and resulted in a victory for Blackstones who convincingly beat Parkway.
Rose Bowl and Plate
The Rose Bowl and Plate were played for in an Australian Pairs competition. Fortunately, apart from a sharp shower just as we were stopping for lunch the weather was kind to us. All pairs played five games, each consisting of seven ends. At the end of the day it was all down to the number of shots scored that separated the two leading pairs. Both pairs had finished with 32 points and both had won 20 ends, but coming out on top and winners of the Rose Bowl were Angela Cox and Jim Pryor who scored 47 shots who beat Mavis Vaudin and Bill Ives who scored 36 shots and received the Plate as runners up.
And now for something completely different.
And it was! This new competition saw as many as four singles games being played at one time in all directions across the green. Players were put into three groups of six and all played each other over seven ends. The last round of matches saw all players playing off for final positions from 18th to first. Final three to play were Angela Cox, Peter Cox and Nolan Catterwell who had each won their respective groups. Nolan winning this match to finish first with Angela second and Peter third. The competition had been thought up by Nick Carr who was thanked for organising such an enjoyable afternoon.
Eight teams contested an excellent Triples competition played on Saturday 12th September. All teams played four games, each over eleven ends, at the end of the day Anne White, Sue Moir and Peter White emerged as winners with 40 points, winning all four of their matches.
Open and Mixed Pairs
Ann Northen and Sue Moir emerged triumphant against Robin Freeman and Paul Christophi in the Open Pairs. After taking a substanial lead they were gradually pegged back before eventually winning the game 17 -13.
In the Mixed Pairs Final Phyl Long and Nolan Catterwell beat Pat and David Booth. Pat and David took an early 8 – 1 lead after four ends, but they then lost the next nine ends to go 8 -16 down. This proved just too much to recover from eventually losing 13 – 21.
Congratulations to John Kingsmill who became the latest trophy winner when he beat John Vaudin 16 – 10 in the Final.
Men’s 4 Woods
Malcolm Cullingworth won the Men’s 4 Woods in what turned out to be a close encounter. Going several shots down in the early ends, Robin Freeman pulled back very well, only to lose 21 – 19 when dropping two shots on what turned out to be the last end.
Ladies 4 Woods
Both ladies are to be congratulated on producing a very close and entertaining game which took almost two hours to complete. Ann Cullingworth fought back strongly to lead 20 -19 but Angela scored two on what was the last end to win 21 -19.
Mens 2 Woods
Peter Cox won the 2 Woods trophy with a 22 – 4 win against Mick Fisher, who despite some really good ends could not get the better of his ultra consistent opponent. Peter will now go on to represent the Club in next seasons County Champion of Champions competition.
Congratulations to Nick Carr who defeated Mick Fisher in the final. Bowling consistently well on both short and long ends he ended up winning 57 – 33.
Pat Booth is the Novices champion for this year, she defeated Bob Trickey in a game with some really close ends. Pat eventually won 24 – 11.
Langtoft 19 competition
Congratulations to Sue Moir who bowled very well to beat Peter Cox 21 – 5 in the final.
Ladies Two Woods
Angela Cox defeated Ann Cullingworth 21 – 10 to win the Ladis Two Woods Final.
Angela will now represent the Club in next seasons Champion of Champions County competition.
